16 GB RAM on a smartphone! Why?
Samsung recently launched the first smartphone in the market with a whopping 16 GB of RAM! Samsung S20 Ultra! Do you really need it?
Getting more and more in numbers is what the smartphone industry is doing these days! Be it in terms of Cameras, RAM, or Battery Capacity.
Getting more storage is fair as it is the need of the hour because day-by-day the usage of smartphones is increasing beyond the normal and with improving camera quality and number of apps we use, we need more storage but 16 GB of RAM? I couldn't digest that!
Let’s get to, what a RAM does for your smartphone, Don’t worry, it won’t be a lecture on Random Access Memory! Wow, you just learned the full-form!
Say, you opened an app (Umm… PUBG!), PUBG would be loaded into RAM, and all of a sudden you remember to send your professor an email (I know, you’ll do after the game ends!) but assume you opened the email app, you can swiftly jump back to where you left off in PUBG (unless you’re killed) without a fresh load on RAM and this is the reason RAM is important, Multitasking!
We use many apps at a time and we switch from one to another very often, all the magic under the hood is handled by RAM! The more the RAM, the more apps would stay loaded and your phone won’t feel the lag in multi-tasking! So Apple must be using more RAM right in their latest smartphones?
NO! The latest model of Apple has just 4 GBs of RAM! Happy Realization!
So, Why more RAM RAMsung? Oops! SAMSUNG
Here’s my take:
There is something known as “Samsung Dex”, it basically extends your smartphone to a PC and aims to eliminate PC by providing you the desktop computing experience through the smartphone and Samsung wants to get that out in the future so, it can be the reason for 16 GB RAM!
RAM optimization or Memory Management! Yes! It is easy for smartphone vendors to add more gigs of RAM into a smartphone instead of providing lower RAM with optimized software as it needs a hell of clean code to bring magic on low-end hardware!
Future-Proof! Samsung and other vendors tend to make people feel insecure about the future, they say buying more RAM would make you future proof as there would be lots of apps and games that would require more RAM!
Pure gimmick! Yes, many vendors provide more RAM just to get the attractive figures on the specification sheet, and who is not attracted by figures?
I am not saying, more RAM is stupid or useless!
More RAM is great as it doesn’t harm if unused but just think about your usage first before jumping into the pool of higher RAM smartphones unless you’re a gamer!
8/12/16 GB of RAM won’t make your phone a rocket, nor it would make your voice soft while you’re talking to your GF/BF! Introspect before you Invest!
